The Northern and Western border regions of Macedonia should not be visited by foreigners as there are risks of sporadic violence stemming from ethnic tension in the Northern military zone, as well as the chance of encountering unexploded ordinance off the beaten track in Western zones. As a result of the latter, main roads should be used and night time driving in these regions should be avoided. Generally trips to Macedonia are safe, but being wary of these points doesn’t hurt. Vaccinations against typhoid and poliomyelitis are usually recommended. Most foods are generally considered safe to eat, though bottled water is recommended over the chlorinated tap water.
