Roads in Macedonia are generally of a good standard in main towns and cities, though the surface quality quickly degenerates in more rural areas. Roads away from civilisation are often covered in potholes, unmarked and unlit at night, making night driving out of the question. Macedonian drivers are something to be very weary of, as the country has the dubious honour of having one of the highest auto accident fatality rates in Europe – something that comes down to the flagrant disregard for the rules of the road put forward by a lot of native drivers. Bus services in the country are well developed and popular, as well as cheap, and cover most destinations in the country – though long distance journeys should be booked well in advance. Train travel in Macedonia is a relatively decent affair, with cheap prices and more or less efficient services. Long delays are not uncommon and valuables should be safely stowed away during journeys. There are no regular internal flights in Macedonia, though there are sometimes services between Ohrid and Skopje.
